Example Use of NYC’s Global Find and Replace

Question:

"I have the phrase ’32 oz can’ in many places in the ingredients list and all over the place. I want to replace all the instances of ’32 oz can’ with the phrase ‘can (32 oz)’ to make it more compatible with nutrition analysis.  Could you explain how to do the global find and replace with this example?"

Answer:

I suggest you practice with NYC’s Find and Replace on a JUNK copy of your cookbook.  So here are the steps that I would take as a beginner in the use of this powerful tool:

0.  Save a copy of your cookbook to a new cookbook called JUNK (File... Save Cookbook As... "JUNK").  The JUNK cookbook should now be open.

1.  Review and edit the find and replace keywords (see Tools... Data Management... Cookbooks tab... Customize Find and Replace frame... Text to Replace... button).

Click a word in the Text To Use frame, and you will see associated words in the Text To Replace frame.  If you don't want any of the word replacements to be made, you can delete entries in the Text To Use and Text To Replace frames (all of these changes will be made when you use Find and Replace).  For your case, enter "can (32 oz)" without the quotes in the Text To Use textbox and press Add.  Then click "can (32 oz)" in the Text to Use list and enter "32 oz can" in the Text To Replace text box.  Save your changes.

2.  In the Tools... Data Management... Cookbooks tab... Specify Range and Operation frame, click the option "current cookbook" to make only changes in the open cookbook, or click "across cookbooks" to make the change in all cookbooks (that are in the same folder as the open cookbook).  Press the Find and Replace... button, and confirm with Yes button.  You have just made all the changes in the customized Find and Replace keywords.  You can search for “32 oz can” now and should find them all replaced by “can (32 oz)”.

3.  Once you are comfortable with the above steps, repeat steps 1-2 on your real cookbook.
