How to Get Your Recipes from Other Software into NYC

How to get your recipes from:

Meal-Master

Export your recipes from Meal-Master to a text file using the *.mmf text format.

Use NYC File… Import Recipes… to import the resulting *.mmf file.

Mastercook

Export your recipes from Mastercook to a text file using the *.mxp text format.

Use NYC File… Import Recipes… to import the resulting *.mxp file.

Cook’n

Export your recipes from Cook’n to a text file (*.txt file extension).

Download the CvrtCookn2NYCgen utility program and install it.  Run CvrtCookn2NYCgen to convert Cook’n text recipe files into NYC’s generic text import format.  This utility program will read your Cook’n text file and create a new text file in NYC generic format that has “NYCgen” added to the filename.   This output file will be in the same folder as your Cook’n export text file.

Use NYC File… Import Recipes… to import the resulting *NYCgen.txt file that was created by CvrtCookn2NYCgen.

Compu-Chef

We have developed a utility program to convert Compu-Chef text export files to NYC’ generic text format (which can be imported into NYC).  Here is the process:

Make sure your recipes from Compu-Chef are in a text file (*.ccf file format).

Download the CvrtCompuChef2NYCgen utility program and install it.  Run CvrtCookn2NYCgen to convert Compu-Chef text recipe files (*.ccf) into NYC’s generic text import format.  This utility program will read your Compu-Chef text file and create a new text file in NYC generic format that has “NYCgen.txt” added to the filename.   This output file will be in the same folder as your Compu-Chef export text file.

Use NYC File… Import Recipes… to import the resulting *NYCgen.txt file that was created by CvrtCompuChef2NYCgen.

Key Home Gourmet

NYC cannot officially import KHG text files.  However, NYC users have found that the KHG export format is exactly like that of Mastercook except for the header line, so with some minor editing, KHG recipes can be imported directly into NYC.

Before trying to import a *.kxp file created by KHG, edit the *.kxp file and use your text editor’s Edit… Replace… feature to change all occurrences of "Exported from Key Home Gourmet" to "Exported from Mastercook" (this line precedes each recipe in the file so each of these lines must be changed).  You may also want to change the .kxp file extension to .mxp .

Use NYC File… Import Recipes… to import the resulting *.mxp file.

Other software

If your other software can export to Meal-Master (*.mmf) or Mastercook (*.mxp) text formats, then NYC can import those directly using File... Import Recipes... If your software only exports to some other text format, you can touch up the export file into NYC's generic text format (using a text editor like Notepad).  See the file "generic.txt" in your NYC \user folder for numerous descriptive examples of this simple text format, or download the generic.txt file here. You could put all the .zip files into one .

Use NYC File… Import Recipes… to import the resulting NYC generic text file (*.txt).

Word processor

Open the file in your word processor and and save the file as a text file.  Then touch up the text file into NYC’s generic text format using a text editor like Notepad.  Follow the generic text formatting rules described in the above section on “Other software”.

Use NYC File… Import Recipes… to import the resulting NYC generic text file (*.txt).

Hard copy

Scan your recipes and use your scanner’s OCR (Optical Character Recognition) capability to create a text file of the recipes.  You will need to spell-check this file because no OCR software works perfectly.  Then touch up the text file into NYC’s generic text format using a text editor like Notepad.  Follow the generic text formatting rules described in the above section on “Other software”.

Use NYC File… Import Recipes… to import the NYC resulting generic text file (*.txt).
